Stuffed Cabbage

Updated: Aug 29, 2023

Ingredients 1 Head Cabbage 2 Pounds Ground Beef 2 Eggs, beaten 1/2 Cup Seasoned Bread Crumbs Salt and Pepper 1 Bottle Chili Sauce 1 Jar Grape Jelly - 13.5 Ounces 1/2 Cup Raisins 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Instructions 1. Core cabbage and place in bowl with about 1" of water and microwave until leaves of cabbage soften and are pliable. 2. Combine meat with eggs, crumbs, salt and pepper and mix well. 3. In a heavy pot, combine the chili sauce and grape jelly and lemon juice and raisins. Add about 1/4 cup of water used to rinse bottle from the chili sauce. Bring to boil and stir till jelly is melted and ingredients are blended. Add raisins. Reduce to a simmer. 4. Place a leaf of cabbage on work surface. Place about 1/3 cup of meat mixture in middle of leaf and fold sides and bottom up envelope style and roll to close. Place rolls carefully in simmering sauce and cook over low heat for 1 hour.

Description Great served with rice

Notes A great hint - an easier way to soften the cabbage is to put it in the freezer overnight and defrost a few hours before assembling this. The leaves will peel right off. If it isn't completely defrosted, a few minutes in the microwave makes it perfect for rolling. The last few times that I have made this I have used ground turkey and cauliflower crumbs in place of the beef and bread crumbs. The sauce is so good that no on notices that I have "down sized" it. I also like to throw some ginger snaps in the gravy as my mother did when she made this with a gravy from scratch.

You did not specify a brand or size of bottle on the chili sauce.

It comes in many different brands and sizes. I will be using a sweet chili sauce and the bottle is huge

Please provide some guidance. Thank you 😊

I have tried to give credit to the source of the recipe where possible.  I never dreamt when I started trying recipes and saving the ones that I liked that there would be something called the Internet where I could share them.  My gratitude to the sources where I was able to provide them and my apologies where I had no way to credit them.
